American Airlines (AA) has taken delivery of its first ever Dreamliner, with the B787-8 having flown from Boeing’s factory in Everett, Washington, to Dallas/Fort Worth on January 23.
"We are committed to delivering a fantastic product for our customers with the continuation of our unprecedented fleet renewal program and more than $2 billion in improvements in the customer experience," said Doug Parker, AA's chairman and chief executive. "The B787 makes our fleet younger and more modern and it will open up new possibilities to connect our customers to the places they want to fly."
The US carrier has a further 41 B787s on firm order, including 15 B787-8s and 26 of the larger B787-9 variant, with the right to purchase an additional 58.
AA plans to initially deploy the new aircraft domestically between its US hubs, before launching it on international flights. Revenue services are slated to begin in the second quarter of 2015.
While the carrier hasn’t officially announced the seating arrangement on the B787, it has revealed that the modern aircraft will offer the same Business Suites seen on the refreshed B777-200. In addition, a walk-up bar, mood lighting and international wifi will also be offered.
Having invested more than US$2 billion to improve its offering, AA is looking to introduce fully lie-flat seats on all of its international long-haul aircraft, while providing wifi, additional inflight entertainment options, and power outlets onboard. Cabin refreshes and enhancements are also underway, as the carrier plans to retrofit its entire fleet of B777-200s and selected B767-300s, B757-200s and A319s.
