Pegasus to add UK destinations

Turkish budget carrier Pegasus Airlines has announced it is to serve Manchester and Birmingham from next year, along with plans to double its current fleet of aircraft.

Pegasus, which currently flies daily between London and Istanbul, is set to expand its UK-Turkey operations to 17 flights per week to include new destinations to and from both countries.

Bodrum and Dalaman will join Istanbul on Pegasus’ list of destinations out of London Stansted. Pegasus will also begin services from Manchester to Antalya and Dalaman while Birmingham will be connected to Antalya and Bodrum.

Pegasus’ chairman Ali Sabanci also announced an order for 23 new generation B737-800s, doubling the size of its current fleet by 2012.

The no-frills airline carried more than twice as many passengers (213,136) in the first ten months of 2009 than in the whole of the previous year, prompting its decision to add more UK destinations.

Pegasus recently acquired a large stake in Germany’s second biggest airline Air Berlin. A partnership between the two has allowed Pegasus to add long-haul routes to its website including Dusseldorf to Miami, Berlin to Bangkok and Munich to Cape Town.

Anyone on Pegasus’ website wishing to book a ticket on one of the long-haul routes is redirected to Air Berlin’s website to finish the transaction.

Last month Bmibaby and Germanwings announced a similar website agreement signalling a growing collaboration between low-cost airlines over fare distribution. Germanwings has also hinted at a similar deal with German leisure carrier Condor (see online news October 27).
