Austrian set for long-haul seat revamp

Austrian Airlines has completed fitting 32 of its short-haul A320 and B737 aircraft with new seating featuring “up to 10cm more space for legs and knees”, and will begin fitting new long-haul seats late next year.

The carrier unveiled its new short-haul seating last year (see online news November 25, 2010), and has now fitted the product to 21 A320 aircraft, and 11 B737s.

Austrian says the new leather seats feature an “innovative construction” meaning more legroom for passengers without having to reduce the number of seats onboard – indeed an average of just under five seats have been added to each aircraft as a result of the new product.

The carrier will now fit the seat to newer A320 aircraft which were only incorporated into the fleet this year, and will also refit the cabins of its ten long-haul B767 and 777 aircraft with “new, modern economy seats, a new in-flight entertainment system and new lie-flat business class seats” during the winter 2012/2013 season.
