Indian carrier IndiGo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus for 250 of the manufacturer’s A320neo aircraft.
When finalised, the order will become the single largest order that Airbus has ever received by number of aircraft. It is also a significant boost to the previous orders Airbus has received from IndiGo, which consisted of 100 A320ceo and 180 A320neo.
“This new order reaffirms IndiGo’s commitment to the long-term development of affordable air transportation in India and overseas,” said Aditya Ghosh, president of the airline. “The additional aircraft will enable us to continue to bring our low fares and create more job opportunities and growth”.
The A320neo incorporates the latest generation engines and large Sharklet wing-tip devices that are expected to contribute to the 20 per cent fuel saving by 2020. This is equivalent to a reduction of 5,000 tonnes of CO2 per aircraft every year.
