IanFromHKGParticipantI was just looking at my account today and realised that before my current Marco Polo membership year ends in the summer I will have accumulated two million Club miles (the ones that count towards status rather than free flights – think BA Tier Points rather than Avios). I know some airlines offer some sort of recognition when milestones are passed (in North America it seems one million miles is the point – see http://blog.frequentflyerbonuses.com/2010/08/air-canada-aeroplan-formally-launch.html and http://www.aa.com/i18n/utility/millionMiler.jsp?anchorLocation=DirectURL&title=millionmiler). I didn’t get anything when I passed a million miles. It will have taken me a little over twenty years to hit two million. Does anyone know if there is any recognition at that point, and if so what it is?

LuganoPirateParticipantSadly Ian I don’t think you’ll get much recognition. I don’t know how Club Miles compare (in terms of distances flown) to status miles with Star, but 2 million over 20 years is 100,000 a year. In Star terms that just gets you to gold. 700k over two years gets you to the next top level and so I guess that means a lot of flying!
In ten years I managed 1.4m status miles, and I didn’t get anything when I passed the million mile mark. Funnily, when I hadn’t flown with Swiss for three months I got a First Class serviette sent to me as a reminder of what I’m missing. I still have it and use it regularly and when I’m not home my boys fight for the privilege of using it!!!

IanFromHKGParticipantOh well!!
On a happier note, the memsahib got bumped up to First on CX on her flight over to London last night. Lucky so-and-so, I haven’t been upgraded on long-haul for 6 years!

oldchinahandParticipantIan,I find it a some what disappointing and a little odd that your achievement has not been recognised but a sign of the commercial times in which we live I suppose. Cathay presented me with rather splendid gifts when I passed 1 and 2 million but the 2 million was back in about 2005 and with the airline being so much larger now perhaps it is no longer recognised as in the past.
I expect to nudge past 3 million this year and will be interested to see if that is noticed in any way !21 Mar 2014

IanFromHKGParticipantWell, me too, oldchinahand. Still, I just did the calculations, and I shall hit the two million mark in early May when travelling with the memsahib. Let’s see what transpires!

oldchinahandParticipantA little off topic but this thread has prompted me to take a look at my Club Profile, which I don’t often do. It shows that I have been a member for almost 40 years. This rather astonished me and set me wondering on what date the then Marco Polo Club was formed and if there are any founding members still around in HK. It is unlikely that there are any based in the UK as CX was blocked from the UK market by the then government owned BOAC until, if my recall is correct,1981.. In the early seventies when I first came to HK and started to fly ‘Cathay’ long haul was Tokyo and Sydney on the 707 and around Asia on aging Conair’s and later on the brand spanking new Tri-star. Great fun in those days as with the airline being still small everyone in management and flight crew was accessible and one often was able to sit in the cockpit for the landing into Kai Tak. Cathay’s attention to passenger service and comfort has always been excellent and that is very pleasing that this has never changed.

IanFromHKGParticipantWell, the two million miles passed, as did my twenty-first anniversary, with not a hint of recognition (mind you, I am flying out tonight – so maybe something nice will happen!). After a couple of weeks I wrote to MPC expressing my disappointment. Here is their response, which I find rather underwhelming:
Dear Mr _________
Thank you for contacting The Marco Polo Service Centre
It is always a special moment when members reach over two million miles in a span of two decades. Knowing that there are many airlines in the market that you can choose to travel with these days, we most certainly value your continuing support in flying Cathay Pacific and Dragonair since 1993.
We fully understand your sentiments and very much appreciate your taking the time to share your feedback with us. Please be assured that your support is most valued and we have forwarded your message to senior management for further review. We will get back to you again as quickly as we can.
Kind regards

canuckladParticipantCongratulations Ian….That’s a whole lot of noodles …. : )
I’m sure I don’t need to translate this for you, but I’m going to anyway….Cathay City talk: Customer Relations Executive
Real World talk: Low paid non-empowered letter opener clerk (probably in Bangalore or Guangzhou)To be fair to Cathay, if your Executive person has escalated it in a timely manner, I’d be very surprised if your flight this evening is uneventful…….Keep us informed!

IanFromHKGParticipantWell, I am now checked in, and events have so far failed to happen. There is an empty seat in First, and they aren’t giving it to me…

canuckladParticipantIan, I take it you’re at Chep Lap Kok ….. So there’s still time …..maybe they’re waiting to surprise you on board….
If you where at a place where CX use outsourced staff, i think you’ll be out of luck….
I wonder how many other CX flyers have reached your milestone4 Jul 2014
