Austrian Airlines is to drop its Vienna-Tokyo route from September 4.
In a statement the carrier said:
“The economic slowdown in Japan combined with the decline in value of the Japanese yen, which began about three years ago, [has] led to tough price competition.
“These circumstances made the Vienna-Tokyo route unprofitable for Austrian Airlines.”
The termination of the route coincides with the launch of Austrian flights from Vienna to Hong Kong from September 5 (see news March 10).
The news comes as Austrian relaunched its flights to Shanghai this week. The carrier is initially operating the B777 route five times-weekly, moving to a daily service from May 1.
