Intercontinental resort opens in Chennai

Intercontinental Hotels Group has opened a property in Chennai.

The Intercontinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort is the second hotel in India to open under IHG's Resort brand.

Located 30km from Chennai International airport, facing the Bay of Bengal on East Coast Road, the hotel features 105 rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, a health club and spa, and extensive meeting space.

There are also three drinking and dining options - the Melting Pot with live kitchens serving South Asian, European and Indian food; Chinese eatery the Tao of Peng; and the Gatsby Lounge bar.

The new-build resort, which opened this month, was designed by CV Sydney.

Shantha de Silva, head of south-west Asia for Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts, said: "The opening of Intercontinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort marks an important milestone in IHG's journey in India.

"Our newest property in Chennai will offer unrivalled facilities and access to many cultural opportunities of one of the country’s biggest cities."

Vijai Singh, general manager of the resort, said: "The Intercontinental brand is trusted around the world for its superior service, which guests have come to know and appreciate. [The] Intercontinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort will be one of the first five-star beach resorts on the east coast of India."

Earlier this month, IHG revealed the five restaurants and bars that will feature in its second London property, Intercontinental London – The O2, when it opens this winter (see news, October 4).
