Cathay Pacific triples Asia Miles accrual on inflight sales

22 Aug 2014 by Clement Huang

We all know that the best way to earn frequent flyer miles is through flying. Or is it? The promotional offer currently being offered by Cathay Pacific (CX) on its inflight sales may just challenge that notion.

For the rest of the month, CX is offering a “Triple Asia Miles” accrual rate for any inflight purchase exceeding HKD2,500 (US$322) in a single receipt.

This means that regular credit card holders, who would typically earn 1 Asia Mile for every HKD5 (US$0.6) spent, will now see this beefed up to 3 Asia Miles.

However, the truly sweet offer is reserved for those who hold a Cathay Pacific co-branded credit card. The normal earning rate for these cardholders is 2 Asia Miles for every HKD5 spent, but with the triple miles boost, these lucky individuals will earn an extremely generous 6 Asia Miles for every HKD5. That’s better than a 1:1 ratio!

Or to put it another way, a single purchase of HKD2,500 would normally earn Cathay Pacific co-branded credit card holders 1,000 Asia Miles. With the triple miles deal, these cardholders will now earn 3,000 miles instead - that’s roughly the same amount of miles earned from an economy class flight between Hong Kong and Singapore, currently listed for a minimum fare of HKD2,262 (US$291). Not bad at all!

Terms and conditions do apply, with the offer excluding purchases of home delivery items. In addition, using vouchers will nullify the promotion.
