Qantas offers free one-way upgrades to first class

11 Aug 2014 by Clement Huang

Ever wanted to try out Qantas’ first class product, but couldn't afford it? Well, now it might be within reach thanks to a new offer from the Australian carrier.

The Flying Kangaroo is offering a “Buy Business, Get First in One Direction” deal for flights to Hong Kong, London or Dallas. While single or return journey tickets are eligible for this offer, passengers will only receive a free upgrade to first class one-way.

Naturally, there are some restrictions. For starters, the upgrade deal is only valid on selected business fare classes. These include J/C/D/I for both London and Hong Kong, and J/C/D for Dallas.

In addition, Qantas is only offering the deal for services operated by the Airbus A380. So customers eager to take advantage of the offer to Hong Kong should ensure that they do so before September 28 - when Qantas will be replacing the A380 with the smaller Boeing 747 (see here).

For those bound for London, there is much more flexibility as all flights from Sydney and Melbourne are serviced by the A380. The offer is valid for travel between August 15 and January 31, 2015, however the window to buy the offer tickets will only last for one week, from August 8 to 15.

Meanwhile, Qantas will only begin deploying the A380 on its Dallas route from September 29 onwards (see here), so the deal will begin from then through to July 31, 2015. Like the London service, sales dates are also from August 8 to 15.

As an added bonus, The Flying Kangaroo is offering points and status accruals at first class rates – even if passengers have only paid for a business class fare.
