Lufthansa began operation of the world’s first commercial B747-800 Intercontinental aircraft on June 1 and marked the launch of its Frankfurt-Washington route.

As reported earlier (see story here), the new "Queen of the Skies" – a name previously associated with the B747-400s – is the first of 20 ordered by Lufthansa, of which five will be delivered by the end of this year and deployed on flights to New Delhi, Bangalore, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The aircraft is configured with 362 seats, with 262 in economy, eight in first class and 92 newly designed V-style ones the business class cabin (for the seatplan, click here, and for a look at the new seat, click here).

The carrier has launched a dedicated microsite offering information on the Intercontinental such as product features as well as interactive games and a video of the first flight.
