British Airways members of the Unite union have voted in favour of fresh strike action, with general secretary Len McCluskey saying that the vote shows “that cabin crew remain determined to win justice”.
According to Unite just under 10,000 crew were polled (9,824), with 6,981 returning valid papers, and of these 83 per cent (5,811) voted in favour of strike action.
The percentage of yes votes is higher than the last vote (which was deemed invalid after alleged flaws - see online news February 8). A total of 78.5 per cent of voters were in favour of fresh strikes back in January, although a higher number of crew were polled (10,200).
Commenting on the result Unite’s general secretary Len McCluskey said:
“This vote shows that cabin crew remain determined to win justice. We urge BA's boardroom to see this as a clear message that they must think again about how to regain the trust and confidence of a significant part of their cabin crew operation. "We continue to be in discussions with the company to find a solution to this long-running dispute."
BA cabin staff staged a total of 22 days of strike action last year, which are estimated to have cost the carrier over £150 million.
