Nature disrupts flight services in Bali and New York

Volcanic ash in Bali and heavy snowfall in New York have been affecting flights in and out of these destinations. 

Cathay Pacific (CX) and Singapore Airlines (SIA) cancelled or delayed services yesterday due to the week-long volcanic activity of Mount Bromo in East Java. Indonesian officials reported that Air France-KLM, Jetstar, Virgin Blue and ValueAir also followed suit.

The CX785 flight was enroute to Denpasar yesterday but had to turn back and return to Hong Kong. Today's flights to Denpasar did not push through due to hazy conditions and have been rescheduled for tomorrow morning, January 29, 2011. Scheduled departures are 1005, 1135 and 1400, which means return flights from Denpasar have also been delayed with times yet to be confirmed.

SIA flights to and from Singapore and Denpasar were also cancelled yesterday. Another flight, which was scheduled to depart Singapore at 1850 yesterday, was rescheduled to 1030 this morning, using a larger aircraft – the Boeing B747-400 instead the the B777-200 to accommodate the backlog of passengers. The morning flight from Singapore to Denapasar, originally scheduled to depart at 0915 today, has been delayed and the rescheduled time yet to be confirmed.

Flights in and out of New York J.F Kennedy and Newark airport have been disrupted since January 26, but operations have resumed today. Flights may still be subject to delays as the airport deals with backlog.The Port Authority of New York reported that at least 325 flights were cancelled at JFK airport and 405 were cancelled at Newark.

Passengers are advised to check flight status’ on the respective carriers’ websites. CX passengers can input flight details under "Manage My Booking" on their website to receive timely updates via email or SMS while SIA passengers can check the website under "News Alert" for regular updates.
