Snow update: Gatwick airport closed till "at least 6am on Friday"

2 Dec 2010 by BusinessTraveller

Heavy snowfall has caused Gatwick to close until 6am on Friday at the earliest. Edinburgh airport is also closed, and Eurostar is operating a "significantly reduced timetable".

A statement on Gatwick's website says:

"After more heavy snow overnight and with forecasts of further snow, Gatwick will remain closed until at least 6am on Friday 03 December.

"There will be no flights arriving or departing today, and passengers can expect further disruption, delays and cancellations as long as the severe weather continues. Passengers should not travel to the airport today, those scheduled to fly tomorrow should check with their airline before travelling to the airport.

"We are doing everything we can to resume operations, our teams are working around the clock to make the runway safe for aircraft to use and get our passengers flying again."

Edinburgh currently advises:

"Edinburgh Airport is closed due to heavy snow showers. We anticipate that the runway will be clear and open at 10am. Please contact your airline for further information."

London City says its runway will be closed until midday today, while the advice on the Eurostar website is as follows:

"Due to the current weather conditions, Eurostar will be operating a significantly reduced timetable on Thursday 2 December, with a number of cancellations. In addition, Eurostar services will be subject to delays of up to 90 minutes.

"Therefore we are strongly advising passengers booked for Thursday to postpone their journey if it is not essential, and are offering free exchanges or refunds.

"Tickets for travel today or tomorrow are sold out so please only come to one of our stations if you already have a ticket for today."

Heathrow is open "and most flights are operating", while Manchester and Birmingham are not currently reporting issues. Southampton airport however will be closed until at least 2pm today. Flights have resumed at Dublin airport after "extensive snow and ice clearance of the main runway, taxiways and associated apron area overnight".
