Plan for second Beijing airport in the works

19 Aug 2010

Beijing Airport authorities are planning a feasibility study for a second airport for the city.

The facility is likely to be located in the southern part of Beijing, local newspapers have quoted them saying.

Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) opened in March 2008 designed to handle 86 million passengers annually. However, passenger throughput has reached 65.4 million last year, a figure predicted to rise to 75 million this year.

The latest report by the Geneva-based Airports Council International even ranked it the world's third busiest airport, putting it behind Atlanta and London's Heathrow in terms of domestic and international passenger numbers in 2009 (see news)
