Bangkok unrest prompts embassies to shut down

14 May 2010

Escalating violence in central Bangkok has prompted the US, British, New Zealand and Dutch embassies to suspend operations until further notice.

Various protests rallies of the anti-government factions have continuously been taking place near premises of these foreign missions that diplomats deemed it too dangerous to carry on normal business. In April, the Finland embassy moved its offices to a temporary location due to similar security concerns.

Bangkok Metro has also shut down the operations at Silom and Lumpini stations after last night's clashes which left one dead and eight wounded, including a prominent "Red Shirt" leader.
