30 Jul 2009 by Sara Turner

Holiday Inn MaleIntercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) is set to launch its Holiday Inn brand in the capital city Male, marking the group’s first opening in the Maldives.

The 117-room Holiday Inn Male will open on September 1. Located near the harbourfront, guests will be able to take a five-minute speedboat ride from Male International Airport to get to the hotel.

The property is the city’s tallest hotel, at 15 storeys, and will have a rooftop restaurant offering European-Japanese fusion cuisine, as well as the all day dining restaurant Lobby Café. It will also offer meeting and conference facilities, including the 255sqm Grand Ballroom.

Leisure facilities include a rooftop swimming pool, a fitness centre and the Coconut Spa.

Jolyon Bulley, vice president operations, South East and South West Asia at IHG, said: “Holiday Inn Malé will offer leisure and corporate guests alike a perfect place to relax in comfort or conduct business with ease.”

The opening of the Holiday Inn property will come shortly before British Airways launches its new thrice-weekly direct service from Gatwick to Male, on October 25. Flights will depart from Gatwick on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 1910, returning from Male on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 1320 local time.

Holiday Inn Male will feature the new Holiday Inn branding, which is being rolled out across all 3,200 properties in the portfolio. IHG recently celebrated a milestone in New York, with the 1,000th relaunch (see online news July 24).
