The ban on carrying liquids in hand luggage is likely to be lifted later this year, according to a report in The Times this week.
The report quotes a Whitehall source as saying that the ban would be lifted at a limited number of airports, possibly as soon as this autumn.
The lifting of the restrictions, which have been in place since August 2006, has been made possible by new screening technology which can distinguish between harmless and potentially explosive liquids.
However the report warns that the move could cause confusion, as only selected airports which install the technology will be allowed to remove restrictions.
