When the first international branded hotel in the southern Philippine city of Davao, the Marco Polo decided to refurbish for its 10th anniversary this month, plans included a totally new product.
The Deck on the fourth floor where the swimming pool is located capitalises on Davaoenos' preference for alfresco socials. Says hotel general manager Stanley Lau: “We’ve always held lots of events by the poolside, and people like to come here and relax after their workshops or meetings.”
The 100 million-peso (US$2.1 million) project focused mainly on this level, upgrading cabana rooms – 15 in total – which are very popular with local residents. Carpets were changed and LCD TVs were installed. In addition, the Saranggani function room, Polo Bistro Pool Lounge featuring open kitchens, more water features and Lazuli Spa were added. Said Lau: “This complements Davao’s ambition towards being known as a wellness destination.
The 245-room Marco Polo is also preferred by foreign and domestic business travellers to this gateway to the island of Mindanao for its central location in the heart of the commercial centre, its range of corporate amenities such as the Club Floor boasting a executive lounge and boardroom, F&B outlets serving from Filipino to continental and choice of meeting spaces, including a ballroom for 100 participants, classroom style.
Another southern Phillippine city hotel that’s come out of a makeover is Cebu City Marriott Hotel, which completed a major renovation of rooms and public spaces in a record six months. “It’s become a totally new and hip-looking hotel,” said the hotel spokesperson.
