I think we should recall that Boeing only launched the 748 in an attempt to act as a spoiler for the A380, it hasn’t worked.

I don’t deny that it is a beautiful plane but it’s not going to sell and its days are numbered. That LH are going to retire it so quickly speaks volumes. It won’t now be too long until we see an A350 order from LH that will replace significant parts of the long haul fleet over the coming years.

Well, CXD, I am not sure. I don’t see the point of LH making such an early announcement for anything else than negotiating. In addition LH, like many others, is struggling filling in its A380s while their B747-8 are always full! So I expect LH to make some changes in their order plans…

Well as I work in finance specialising in organising finance for airlines I do tend to know what is coming. Your assertion that LH can’t fill their A380s but their 748s are always full can be at best anecdota and at worst total nonsense. Anyone knows that loads vary day by day and flight by flight.

I don’t expect any changes in the plans LH have.

I’ve often been on full A380s of SQ, TG, LH and EK.

CXD, my “assertion”, that is nonsense as you kindly wrote, has a source: LH!

Now I didn’t write airlines can never fill in. On some specific routes, we know flights will be full (many having London as point of departure or arrival). But they are not enough of these routes to justify so many A380s… In addition, EK is killing the market. So ultimately, I doubt we’ll see all the A380s being delivered…

Poor old LH – their purchasing and planning department do seem badly off their game. Buying A380s they can’t fill, and 747-8s that even they don’t want…

    Interesting discussion.

Both are marvellous planes. But at the end of the day, it’s the operating costs that are most important.

I wonder what the fuel burn of the B747 is compared with the A380 ? I bet there’s not much difference even though the latter carries more passengers.

Certainly CX has no plans to order either aircraft at the present time according to COO Ivan Chu in a recent interview (hidden behind a paywall) in trade publication ATW.

For future plane purchases CX’s COO indicates that he favours twin-jets like the B777/A350 because of their lower fuel burn per passenger.

CX’s CFO is a Scot. I am sure he is being *very* canny. LOL

I’d be delighted to know the level of your source at LH, was it a cleaner perhaps because let me assure you they were very wrong.
