Believe it was a joint operation between B.Cal and B.A. I was working in West Africa late 70s..early 80s..Sierra Leone,Liberia,Nigeria.Ghana etc. Routes were all covered by BCal network but due to tight schedules sometimes missed my connection to Glasgow so was simply transferred on the Sikorsky “chopper” and caught the BA ‘shuttle” up to Scotland and No charge. Was also a member of the famous Chieftain Club.

I once turned up to LHR for a LGW flight (I think it was with KLM and it flew from both, though I might be wrong).

Anyway, I inquired about the coach between the two, which would have been too slow – I would have missed not only the flight but the next one, so I went to the taxi rank. It must have been the most expensive taxi I have ever taken, but then again, they were catering for a captive market of a small subset of people who were desperate and had few if any alternatives.

Since then I have just specialised in going to the wrong terminal at Gatwick, which is annoying, but only for about 10 minutes.

I believe one of the reasons the service was cancelled was due to noise complaints from residents under the flight path between Heathrow and Gatwick. I was living in Ashtead, Surrey at the time, and remember the helicopters passing overhead multiple times a day.

    Correct.

The helicopter’s route was over some affluent areas and residents objected to the CAA at the time, I believe, when the route licence was about to be renewed.
