I gather from BA South African sources that it is already stripped of most parts. They have been shipped back to the UK to LHR. Now that the decision has been made to scrap it, the engines and ancillary equipment will be removed and shipped back, shortly.

The sum of the value of the parts is probably more than the value of the aircraft in one piece..

Ironically, the crew responsible for the “modification” to the right wing might actually have done BA a favour in the long run.

For Sale : Almost new Boeing 747-436 G-BNLL with one carefull lady owner/ pilot and low milage available now. Some slight (minor) damage to left wing tip and a few small bits and pieces missing but otherwise sound as a button.New owner may wish to change bodywork colours so a good local house painter can be made available. As a bonus this wonderfull plane comes with full tea and coffee making machines as well as 493 lifebelts.

Interested ..please contact Del or Rodney…satisfaction and full guarantee provided and assured…..all reasonable offers..etc

Linking to BigDogs post about Thursdays BBC’s documentary on the 747, would just like to add that it’s a very sad way for such a beautiful and iconic piece of machinery to end its life!

A long way from home and stripped of all dignity : )

    Ouch.

Good bit of journalism by DM though. First bit says the plane could be written off, a few sentences later the piece is bing replaced and the aircraft will shortly return to service.

Always remember to apply the handbrake.

It also says will cost £200,000 to fix. Mind you, I didn’t know planes had a reverse gear!!!

Is there an outcome to the investigation of this incident yet?

18 months later…. stating the bl..ding obvious.- BA pilot error.

Glad to see the building was exonerated.

Apparently BA concluded their own a while ago but was kept private.

Though they did also blame lack of clear lighting on the taxiway.
