British Airways has announced plans to move the Tier Point collection period for all Executive Club members to the start of April.

Currently members have different collection periods depending on which month they joined the programme – the 12-month period starts from the 8th day of the calendar month in which a member takes their first flight, or the 8th day of the following calendar month if a member joins after the 8th of the month.

But on 1 April, 2025 the Tier Point Collection Year for all Executive Club Members will be aligned to start on 1 April and end on 31 March.

Ahead of the change there will be a transition period starting in April 2024. BA has published a FAQ section on its website, but in general for those members with collection periods ending on or before March 2024, the carrier says that “there will be no change to how you earn Tier status and any status earned within this period will be valid for at least 12 months”.

For those with collection periods starting from April 2024, things are a little more complicated. Their 2024/2025 Tier Point Collection Year will be shortened to end on 31 March, 2025, and “A Tier Point Adjustment will be added to your Executive Club account during your new Tier Point Collection Year”.

BA said that “If you earn enough Tier Points during your Tier Point Collection Year to upgrade or renew your Tier status, this will be valid until 30 April, 2026 (new Membership Card Expiry date)”.

The following example has been given:

“Your current Tier Point collection period starts on 9 July, 2023 and ends on 8 July, 2024.

“Your Tier Point Collection Year resets on 8 July 2024, meaning that your next Tier Point Collection Year starts on 9 July, 2024 and ends on 31 March, 2025 instead of 8 July, 2025.

“The Tier Points you earned between 1 April, 2024 and 8 July 2024 will contribute to your overlapping qualification periods and will be applied as a Tier Point Adjustment.

“During the transition, to recognise a full year of earning Tier Points on flights to achieve your Tier status, we’ll award you the Tier Point Adjustment. This is calculated by adding up the Tier Points you earned between 1 April 2024 and 8 July 2024.”

BA says that moving to one calendar period for Tier Point collections will “make it easier to manage travel plans for yourself, colleagues and family”.

The move follows changes made last year to the way members earn Avios through flying, moving away from the previous model of Avios earning being linked to the distance flown, in favour of a system based on spending.
