Finnair has launched complimentary Covid-19 insurance cover for passengers departing from Finland to ‘provide extra protection and security’ in the age of the pandemic. Finnair Corona Cover is applicable for all existing and new bookings for travel between November 3, 2020, and March 31, 2021.

Any customer who is diagnosed with Covid-19 when travelling will be able to claim for any coronavirus-related medical and quarantine expenses incurred in their destination. This applies to all foreign destinations, with no excess fees, and includes the following:

  • Up to €50,000 in medical and repatriation expenses
  • The price of a coronavirus test if positive
  • Quarantine expenses of up to €100 per day for a maximum of 14 days
  • A new return flight to Finland if the original flight is missed due to a coronavirus-related illness

The complimentary insurance cover comes with all Finnair tickets booked through the carrier. Finnair Corona Cover is also included in the Aurinkomatkat package trips and Finnair Holidays bookings when the destination is outside Finland.

Tiina Tissari, Finnair Vice President, Customer Experience and Products, commented on the launch:

“It is important that Finnair customers feel they can travel safely as we recognise that travelling during the pandemic comes with new kinds of concerns and challenges. To meet the needs of our customers during the COVID-19 outbreak, Finnair has introduced its complimentary Finnair Corona Cover.

“Now Finnair customers can enjoy the peace of mind and additional security which comes from Finnair Corona Cover, including cover for medical and quarantine expenses should those insured with us become sick with coronavirus while travelling.”

The airline has advised passengers to contact Finnair’s insurance partner for a consultation and approval for any medical or other expenses before using local services. Expenses will be settled directly with the local service providers provided that the customer first contacts and receives approval from the insurance partner – this means that customers won’t have to pay for the services themselves or carry any risk for the costs.

Finnair is not the first airline to offer coronavirus insurance cover to its passengers. Airlines including Virgin Atlantic, Etihad and Emirates introduced similar initiatives earlier this year.

The airline also recently announced details of a new Covid-19 testing service for its customers, a measure designed to open up travel to countries that require a coronavirus test certificate.
