United Airlines has announced plans to restart flights between San Francisco and London Heathrow in August, as the carrier looks to triple its schedules compared to June.

Nearly 25,000 flights will be added to the network in next month, although the schedule will still only equate to around 40 per cent of August 2019 levels.

Other transatlantic services resuming next month include Chicago to Brussels and Frankfurt, and Newark to Brussels, Munich and Zurich.

Meanwhile resumption of transpacific routes include San Francisco to Hong Kong and Shanghai, and a new route between Chicago and Tokyo Haneda, while to Latin America flights will resume between Houston and Lima, Newark and Sao Paulo, and from Chicago, Newark and San Francisco to Mexico City, San Salvador and Guatemala City.

Overall United will offer 25 per cent of its international schedules in August, up from 16 per cent in July.

“United’s international schedule continues to be guided by customer demand as we add back capacity in regions with relative strength,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network and Alliances.

“For August, we’ve seen increasing demand for leisure travel and have added options to places like Cancun and reinstated service to Tahiti. Additionally, we are further building out service to partner hubs like Frankfurt and Zurich, where customers can connect on to a wide array of destinations.”

Domestically United plans to fly 48 per cent of its 2019 schedule in August, up from 30 per cent in July, including more options to “socially distant vacation options like beach, mountain and national park destinations”.

The carrier will add more than 600 flights to over 200 airports across the US, including the doubling of flights from Newark, the resumption of 50 routes, and the return to service of around 90 aircraft.
