London’s Aldgate district will welcome a new hotel next week, but it won’t be operating under IHG’s Hotel Indigo brand as had originally been intended.

Back in 2015 Business Traveller reported that Hotel Indigo would open a new-build property within a residential and commercial development close to Aldgate East Underground station.

The hotel is still being listed on IHG’s website today (January 17, 2019), but there is no availability for forward bookings, and it is understood the property is same one now being flagged as the Clayton Hotel City of London ahead of its opening next week. Both hotels are listed as being located at 10 Drum Street.

A press release from the Dalata Hotel Group, owners of the Clayton brand, says that the Clayton Hotel City of London will be the third hotel under the brand in London, joining existing properties in Chiswick and Cricklewood.

The hotel will feature 212 rooms, a gym, Globe bar and Grill restaurant, which will offer “a range of delicious fresh dishes using the very best of local British produce and influences by the hotel’s East London location”, as well as coffee from Dalata’s own brand Red Bean Roastery.

According to Dalata the hotel’s design “has been inspired by Victorian textile warehouses and reflects the neighbourhood’s fascinating fusion of East End tradition and contemporary creativity”.

Dalata operates a total of seven Clayton hotels in the UK, in destinations including London, Cardiff, Leeds, Birmingham, Belfast and Manchester airport, and the press release said that the Aldgate opening “This is the first of several Clayton hotel openings planned for the UK as part of a multi-million-pound investment throughout the Clayton Hotel network”.

Commenting on the opening James Feeney, General Manager at Clayton Hotel City of London, said:

“We’re delighted to be opening a new hotel in Aldgate East to build on the already successful network of Clayton hotels in London at Chiswick and Cricklewood.

“This new hotel gives us a presence in a key central location within the city and is ideally located for corporate guests who want to be close to the City of London, and leisure guests visiting the many attractions that the city has to offer.

“The Clayton brand offers high quality affordable luxury from a professional, friendly, knowledgeable team and we look forward to welcoming guests and locals to enjoy many memorable moments in the making.”
