Vistara takes delivery of its first A320neo

Vistara A320neo economy class

On May 24, India’s full-service airline, Vistara took delivery of its 14th aircraft and first A320neo at the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse. Up until then, the airline had an all-A320 fleet.

Delivery of the A320neo is the first of seven aircraft to be leased from BOC Aviation. With this, the airline can now look at expanding its network internationally.

Visitor’s new aircraft comes in a three-class configuration — eight seats in business class, 24 in premium economy and 126 seats in economy class. It features mood lighting, new seat bottom and seat back design, and softer cushions and seat leather across all cabins.

The airline’s brand colours: aubergine and gold dress the business and premium economy cabins; aubergine and grey in economy.

The business class has wider seat backs and enhanced literature pockets, in comparison to what’s available on the A320. The new premium economy cabin is fitted with “redesigned height 4-way adjustable headrest”. Padded head support is now available to economy class passengers.

Commenting on the product enhancements, Phee Teik Yeoh, CEO of Vistara says, “We have paid attention to the smallest of details; from the look and feel of our newly designed seats in fine leather upholstery and mood lighting, to the aroma of a cup of freshly brewed Starbucks coffee on-board, Vistara ensures delight at every touchpoint. The A320neo also ensures operational enhancement as well as cost leadership for us, with extra payload capacity, greater fuel efficiency, and improved range, perfectly aligning with our growth strategy.”

A press release by Airbus reads: “The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver more than 15 per cent fuel and CO2 savings from day one and 20 per cent by 2020, as well as 50 percent noise reduction.”

Vistara signs codeshare agreement with Singapore Airlines and SilkAir

Vistara-SIA codeshare signing

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and SilkAir have signed an agreement to codeshare on Indian domestic flights operated by Vistara, effective March 14. This means, all SIA and SilkAir passengers will now be issued tickets that go beyond the cities at which these carriers lands.

Phee Teik Yeoh, Vistara’s CEO says, “We are delighted to establish our first codeshare partnership with Singapore Airlines and SilkAir. As we continuously work towards eventually becoming a globally renowned airline, codeshare partnerships will play a very important role in helping us get closer to realising that aspiration.”

Under the agreement, SIA will add the SQ code to its Vistara-operated flights from Mumbai and Delhi to ten Indian cities, namely Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Kochi, Kolkata and Port Blair. SIA also flies directly from Singapore to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata, but doesn’t have codeshare flights from these cities.

SilkAir will add the MI code to its Vitara-operated flights from Bengaluru and Kolkata to six Indian destinations, namely Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kochi, Mumbai, New Delhi and Port Blair. SilkAir directly connects Singapore to Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi and Kolkata, but doesn’t have codeshare flights from these cities.

This is the first of its kind agreement for all three airlines — the first codeshare agreement for Vistara and the first codeshare agreement for the SIA group (SIA and SilkAir) with an Indian-based domestic carrier.

Tan Kai Ping, SIA’s senior VP of marketing planning says, “Through the new codeshare agreement, both SIA and SilkAir are able to expand our network reach in the important India market, providing our customers even more travel options and enhanced KrisFlyer benefits.”

As a result of the codeshare partnership, members of KrisFlyer and Club Vistara will enjoy additional tier benefits. A release by Vistara explains that SIA group’s “KrisFlyer Elite Gold and PPS Club members will enjoy lounge access, increased baggage allowance, and priority baggage handling, check-in and boarding when travelling on Vistara-operated flights. Likewise, Club Vistara Platinum and Gold members will enjoy the same benefits when travelling on SIA-operated flights. PPS Club and KrisFlyer members will earn Elite miles when travelling on SIA codeshare flights operated by Vistara”. KrisFlyer members can also redeem their miles for Vistara flights, and vice versa.

Vistara is a New Delhi-based joint venture between Tata Sons and SIA. It marked its second anniversary of operations on January 9, 2017.

Vistara launches #VistaraWomanFlyer service

#VistaraWomanFlyer

After Air India introduced women-only rows of seats in January, yesterday Vistara launched the #VistaraWomanFlyer service.

This service is designed to assist solo women travellers — the carrier will reserve certain seats exclusively for them, as well as offer them baggage and transport assistance.

A statement by Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines reads: “Customers can pre-select seats during booking [and] after booking through the ‘manage my booking’ feature as well as during web check-in. For those who do not pre-select their preferred seats in advance, Vistara will ensure only window or aisle seats are assigned to solo women travellers at check-in. In addition, uniformed Vistara staff will be available at the baggage claim area holding #VistaraWomanFlyer Arrivals Assistance placards, to assist women travellers with their luggage and with the booking of airport-authorised taxis, as well as escort such customers up to the taxi stand upon request.”

Further, in celebration of International Women’s Day (today), Vistara’s inaugural Mumbai-Amritsar UK 735 flight will be operated by an all-women crew as part of the “#WomenWhoMakeUsFly celebration of women in aviation”.

Deepa Chadha, the senior vice president of HR and corporate affairs at Vistara says, “The heights that women around the world have scaled needs no validation. Women are a major force that makes economies stronger and societies healthier, and Vistara is privileged to celebrate International Women’s Day in their honour. I also take this opportunity to salute the contribution of all of the wonderful #WomenWhoMakeUsFly in aviation, including the all-women crew of the inaugural Mumbai-Amritsar flight and I am proud to be on this flight with them.”

Starting May 10, this will be a daily service.

Commenting on the network expansion, Phee Teik Yeoh, the CEO of Vistara said, “We are very excited to begin the New Year with the addition of two new destinations to our growing network. The expansion further cements Vistara’s position in the domestic market as a committed player in the Indian aviation sector. An enormous number of pilgrims and tourists visit Amritsar throughout the year to pray at the Golden Temple and the city also draws visitors from across the globe for its rich culture and cuisine. Amritsar being among the 27 new smart cities to be developed by the Ministry of Urban Development, the city will also attract business travellers in time to come. Leh is another special tourist destination that has emerged to be a favorite amongst millions of Indians. Its Buddhist sites, nearby trekking areas and amazing landscapes are increasingly finding place in the bucket lists of global and local travelers. Both these destinations fit perfectly into Vistara’s network strategy, and we’re confident that our customers would look forward to fly ‘the new feeling’ with us on these new routes.”

Airlines ban the use of Samsung Galaxy Note7 on their aircraft

Samsung Galaxy Note 7

Last week, Samsung suspended sales of its newly launched Samsung Galaxy Note7 and recalled 2.5 million units worldwide, citing explosion of “phablets” due to faulty batteries as the reason.

Thereafter, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a notice on Friday that prohibits the use of Samsung Galaxy Note7 mobile phones onboard. The statement also bans placing the device in check-in baggage.

Vistara and Jet Airways have been quick to act on the DGCA notice and immediately tweeted about it on Friday.

AirAsia Berhad has banned the use of Samsung Galaxy Note7 on all its AirAsia and AirAsia X aircraft, including AirAsia India.

AirAsia says: “Following the recall of the Galaxy Note 7 mobile device by Samsung due to safety concerns over its battery, AirAsia and AirAsia X would like to inform all guests that the usage and charging of the device onboard all our flights are prohibited with immediate effect until further notice.”

Etihad Airways has also temporarily banned the use of Samsung Galaxy Note7 on its aircraft.

A statement released by the Abu Dhabi-based carries says: “Following the global recall by Samsung of its Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, Etihad Airways has, as a precautionary measure, enforced a temporary ban on the in-flight use and battery charging of these devices on all its flights until the issue is rectified by the manufacturer.”

US and Japanese aviation authorities have issued similar warnings to their passengers.

Pakistan’s national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines says: “In view of recent reports about Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices, and the international warnings to airline passengers not to carry this smartphone during flights, PIA passengers are also strongly advised not to carry it, not even in their check-in luggage, as it may compromise aircraft and passenger safety.”
