Royal Brunei to axe Australasian flights

Melbourne will remain as Royal Brunei’s sole Australasian destination following a strategic decision to suspend services to Auckland, Brisbane and Perth from the end of October.

An announcement posted on the carrier’s website today says that “Royal Brunei is moving forward with a comprehensive and sustainable plan to improve its operations and financial performance.”

The national airline of the oil rich City State will also suspend flights to Ho Chi Minh City at the same time. Flights to Kuching in Sarawak (East Malaysia) will be dropped at the end of July.

As a result it means Royal Brunei will be withdrawing completely from both New Zealand and Vietnam.

Says Royal Brunei’s deputy chairman Dermot Mannion, “It was not an easy decision to reduce our route network. However, it is the first step towards creating a stronger foundation that will allow the airline to enhance our value to customers, employees and society.”

The move will come as a blow to UK travellers who book Royal Brunei’s flights on the kangaroo route to Australasia. The airline is known for its attractive pricing in both business and economy class.

The kangaroo route has a reputation for being one of the world’s most competitive and profitability can be an issue for any airline.
