Puyehue volcano causes Argentinian flight disruption

17 Oct 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Flights were grounded at Buenos Aires' international airport yesterday (October 16) due to an ash cloud emitted from Chile´s Puyehue volcano.

International services out of Ezeiza International airport and domestic services from the city´s Jorge Newbery Airport were grounded as the ash cloud swept rapidly across the region. The sky became dense with ash by midday and visibility conditions were poor on the ground until late evening.

British Airways´ daily direct service from Argentina´s capital to London Heathrow was cancelled, along with services operated by American Airlines, LAN, Lufthansa and others. Flights from Buenos Aires to Mexico, Miami and Auckland were among those affected.

Although British Airways´ Saturday 2140 service from London to Buenos Aires arrived yesterday, many international flights to the city were cancelled, including several Iberia flights from Madrid to Buenos Aires.

Flights from Montevideo´s Carrasco International Airport in neighbouring Uruguay were also cancelled, as were some services to the Argentinian and Uruguayan capitals from Brazil.

Conditions have been clear today, October 17, and flights are expected to resume later this afternoon.

The Chilean volcano has been causing upheaval for flights across South America since it began erupting in June this year.
