British Airways is introducing new 3D surround sound for films screened on its long-haul flights.
The technology is available to all passengers regardless of cabin, or whether they use their own headphones or a pair provided by BA.
Creating an "immersive" experience, the carrier said the 3D audio is "achieved by taking the original 5.1 surround sound mix and creating a stereo encode which can be used on any in-flight entertainment system".
Not every film will be adapted to the new technology.
BA has also started to roll-out a new range of headphones for passengers in every cabin.
Those flying in First, Club World and World Traveller Plus will be able to use headphones with improved noise-cancelling technology; those in World Traveller will have new silicone-tipped earbuds with greater noise isolation and comfort, BA said.
Richard D'Cruze, the airline's in-flight entertainment manager, said: "3D surround sound adds a whole new dimension to watching your favourite movie, giving greater depth which really immerses you in the action and unfolding drama."
Yesterday, BA announced it will add its B787-9 Dreamliner on routes to Jeddah, Dubai, Shanghai, New York Newark, Tokyo Narita, Houston, Mumbai and Boston in 2016 (see news, December 9).
