There are unconfirmed rumours that Qantas is about to announce Trans – Atlantic services from LHR to Chicago in 2017 as part of its international expansion plans.

The service, which would use one of the slots vacated by the end of QF’s LHR – Hong Kong services, will be made possible by Qantas exercising their 5th freedom rights akin to those used by Air New Zealand from LHR – LAX and will tag onto a PER – SIN – LHR service that’s also in the planning.

It would initially be operated by a 3 class 747-400 (before the 787-9s arrive) and will connect to the Sydney – Chicago vv service Qantas intends to commence once they get delivery of the 787-9s in the next 12 months.

It’s unclear who Qantas would codeshare on the route, but it’s expected that Emirates will definitely be placing their code on the service to tap into their growing UK customer base.

Qantas will once again be flying ’round the world’ it would appear.

    More news when it comes…

I was intrigued when reading this possibility but have some questions. Why wouldn’t QF fly from Perth to LHR via DXB with their revenue partner on the Kangaroo route as opposed to SIN? If they do transit the route through SIN, could this then be a codeshare with their OW partner BA. For sure, it would make sense for the Trans Atlantic portion to be code shared with BA and AA or will it be operated in competition to them if code shared with EK. It would be obvious the flight from ORD top SYD would be code shared with AA at least as ORD is one of their largest hubs. It really shows the melding of members of an alliance with others not in the alliance, like Air Berlin (OW) and Alitalia (ST) with Etihad and plenty of others I am sure. Makes it interesting.

Nice to see QF back to round the world. I remember they used to fly from the UK to the Bahamas and even into Acapulco on their way back to OZ.

I think you’ve overlooked the date dutchyankee!

I think this has to do with backlash from certain quarters to Qantas cutting the Australia – Singapore – London services.

If the above is true, Qantas customers will be able to fly into Singapore from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne using existing services and then connect to the new Qantas service from Singapore to London – given an alternative to the Australia – Dubai – London option under the QF/EK JV.

As for the Chicago tag on – will be interesting to see what transpires re codeshares. Watch this space I guess…

I thought that, but it looked like a feasible story! Some of the others, like BA actually fixing the IT bug were obviously April Fools, but this was sort of plausible.

“Some of the others, like BA actually fixing the IT bug were obviously April Fools”

Sad that fixing a bug should not be plausible?

Of Course it should be Plausible, but with BA’s track record, very validly (albeit repetitively 🙂 ) pointed out by yourself, I understood your post that it had been fixed was far more likely an April Fools post as opposed to this post re: QF which would, if true and not April Fools, be of great interest I think to have such an option for Trans Atlantic.

Yep, it’s particularly sad that a plain one liner (which I should have been able to write several weeks ago, in a serious context) didn’t need any embellishment or over egging to be an obvious April Fool.

As plausible as it is, sadly it was an April Fools Day prank. Have a good weekend everyone.

i have to give you a big hi-five on this one. You made it seem very convincing..

But i’ve got to say i started raising my left eyebrow the moment you mentioned Chicago which is a rather premium route for BA & AA and those two would rather die than compete with QF.

Then came SIN and that’s where i started laughing thinking ‘don’t disappoint me. Keep on’.
The codeshare with EK part threw me apart. Had you instead mentioned Qatar for being in Oneworld, i would have raised my right eyebrow too (pulling me in), then gone through the whole text again to look for mistakes i may have missed.

    That said, you did good.

There was a report on a german website (aero) saying that AirFrance-KLM was pursuing a codeshare partnershit on some routes with Etihad. Funny thing is that the website hasn’t owned up to this being a April Fools prank.

Then again AirFrance-KLM (and its partner Delta) has been next to LH the biggest opposer of the Gulf carriers.

I do not know what the customs are in every country but i can tell you that 1st April means nothing in Spain. Their day for pranks is 28th December – “el Dia de los Inocentes”.
So where else is the custom different ? or even non-existant?

    Good one.

Actually the most plausible of all your schemes is QF restarting LHR SIN with an EK codeshare. QF and EK already have a mini hub at SIN with flights to Australian and New Zealand ports.

The talk of AirFrance-KLM potentially pursuing a codeshare partnershit on some routes with Etihad really had me wandering, err, I mean wondering….

The foibles and risks of predictive texting…! §:-)
