Swiss announced it will change its baggage regulations across its long-haul network from today, August 1, 2011, moving from a combined weight concept to a piece concept.

The new policy enables passengers to check in a certain number of bags instead of limiting free baggage allowance by weight. The class of travel will determine the number of baggage.

Economy class passengers can now check in one piece weighing up to 23kg, up from the current combined total of 20kg permissable; business class passengers are allowed two pieces of luggage weighing 32kg each, up from the current combined total of 30kg; and first class passengers will be able to check in three pieces of luggage also weighing 32kg each.

For those exceeding the above limits, excess baggage rates will also follow a piece concept. Each additional bag, weighing 23kgs, costs US$114 per sector for European routes and US$286 for intercontinental routes.

Miles and More members will receive greater free baggage allowance depending on their tier level.

Hand baggage provisions have not been changed. Economy passengers are allowed one carry on item while business and first class passengers can carry on two pieces.
