Hotel Check: The Westin Grande Sukhumvit

31 Mar 2006 by intern22

WHAT’S IT LIKE? Renowned design firm Hirsch Bedner, who oversaw the nearly two-year renovation, opted for a mood-lit atmosphere, which begins on the 7th floor lobby and permeates the guestroom corridors and public spaces. For some guests, it may take some getting used to, while others will appreciate the contrast to the glare of Bangkok’s pulsating streets.

WHERE IS IT? Along busy Sukhumvit Road, at the corner of Soi (lane) 19. The Skytrain (Asok Station) and Bangkok subway (Sukhumvit Station) are both on its doorstep, while a Robinson’s Department Store stands next to it.

HOW MANY ROOMS? 364 guestrooms, including 31 suites, two of them in the Deluxe category with the Westin Workout equipment.

ROOM FACILITIES: A Westin trademark: the Heavenly Bed with its firm mattress and four pillows and a bolster, bedside controls; and in the Deluxe Suite, two 25-inch flatscreen TVs, a CD player, coffee maker, good-sized desk and maroon leather chair, two-line telephone, with a separate bath and shower stall completing the amenities. The Westin Service Express gets everything done. Broadband costs US$16 for 24 hours but one can get Wi-Fi access for free in any part of the hotel, including the poolside.

RESTAURANTS: Kisso Japanese is always packed and The Med’s Mediterrasian dishes in the buffet or a la carte menu always draws a good lunch crowd.

BARS: Three: a karaoke lounge with a panoramic view of the city; one by the pool; and Zest Piano Bar in the lobby which is well patronised for its attractive staff and energetic Filipino band that knows all your favourites.

BUSINESS FACILITIES: The Grand Ballroom is good for 1,000 guests. The business centre has three boardrooms (good for six to 10 persons) and six workstations.

LEISURE FACILITIES: The Vareena Spa has the wow factors. Choose the spa suite with a view for ultimate pampering. You’ll be tempted to overstay your booking. The gym and swimming pool are not overly large.

VERDICT: The lighting could be turned up a bit, but with important transportation links just steps away, the hotel is still a winner.

PRICES: Until June 30, Executive Club Rooms cost US$208, based on a two-night stay, and come with perks such as one-way airport transfer, free high-speed internet access in the room, free pressing service of a maximum of three pieces per stay and free two-hour use of the meeting room at the business centre.
