Tried & Tested

Hotel check: Hilton Warsaw Hotel and Convention Centre

27 Feb 2009 by Sara Turner

WHAT’S IT LIKE? This gleaming 29-floor hotel opened in 2007 and offers great views of the city from the bedrooms, and stylish interiors. The lobby is light and echoey, with floor-to-ceiling windows and marble floors.

WHERE IS IT? It’s 11km from Warsaw Frederic Chopin International airport and about 15 minutes on foot from the city centre.

ROOM FACILITIES My 64 sqm Executive Corner suite had a living room with a plush rug, coffee table and sofa, a bathroom and guest washroom, and floor-to-ceiling windows. All rooms come with wired and wifi internet access (24zt/£5 for one hour or 76zt/£16 for 24 hours), 26-inch flatscreen TVs with on-demand movies, minibar, iron and ironing board, tea and coffee-making facilities, a separate bath and shower, heated floors in the bathroom, slippers and robe, Crabtree and Evelyn amenities, radio alarm clock, air conditioning, safe, workdesk and newspapers. My higher category room also came with an espresso machine, free bottled water, a fruit platter, box of chocolates, pastries and a turn-down service. Guests staying in Executive rooms and above have access to the Executive lounge (6.30am-11pm), which provides a continental breakfast, snacks, wifi and laptop use for free. Rooms are in very good condition, with spotless carpets and comfortable beds.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS The 188-seat Meza restaurant is separated from the lobby by a glass wall and has banquette seating, dark wooden tables and abstract prints on the walls. A hot and cold buffet breakfast is served here from 6.30-10.30am during the week (11am at the weekend), and lunch and dinner is served here until 11pm. I tried the lemon linguine, which was very zesty; there is also a good selection of Polish fare. Opposite Meza is the Pistaccio lobby bar and lounge, an open-plan area serving a large range of malt whiskies and cognacs. Adjacent is the two-floor Axis bar, a long, trendy space with neon lighting and a good choice of vodka cocktails. In summer, guests can try the outdoor Piazza terrace and barbeque grill.

MEETING AND BUSINESS FACILITIES The hotel offers the largest convention space in Warsaw, with a ballroom that divides into five and seats 1,850 people theatre-style. There are 12 high-tech meeting rooms, all with natural daylight, mood lighting and in-house audio-visual technicians to hand, and a good-sized business centre.

LEISURE FACILITIES There is a huge Holmes Place gym (open 6am-10pm on weekdays) with 80 Precor and Technogym cardiovascular machines, free weights and a juice bar. You can also join any of 100 classes a week, including power yoga, pilates or spinning. From the windows of the gym you can look down on to the 25-metre heated pool below, which is connected to the Thalgo-Terrake spa, offering steam rooms, spa baths, saunas, a beauty salon, solariums and treatment rooms. Downstairs on the lobby level and in the basement is the 1,500 sqm Casino Olympic, open 24 hours.

HOW MANY ROOMS? There are 314 in total – 232 Hilton Guest rooms, 55 Executive rooms, 16 Corner rooms and 11 suites.

ROOM HIGHLIGHTS The panoramic views, the large bathroom with walk-in rainshower and the comfortable bed.

PRICE Internet rates for a midweek stay in March started from £58 for a Hilton Guest room.

VERDICT An excellent new business hotel with great views, facilities and staff. Probably the best you will get in the city.
