Delta Air Lines will discontinue its daily Boeing B767 Amsterdam – Mumbai service from March 29, depriving the route of its only non-stop air link.
The news is surprising, given that the Netherlands’ KLM recently pulled out of Mumbai, and is also rumoured to axe its Amsterdam–Delhi service from April 1.
SkyTeam alliance partner Air France will still serve both Delhi and Mumbai on a daily basis, offering codeshare connectivity onto US-bound Delta services out of Paris’ Charles-de-Gaulle.
For years, word at Delta was that Amsterdam – Mumbai was among the most profitable routes in the company, with near perfect year-round load factors and significant cargo uplift. However, it looks like this may have changed now with the aggressive expansion of the Gulf carriers in India. For instance, Emirates serves the Mumbai – Dubai route six times a day.
