China Airlines (CAL) has announced that it will be reducing its Taipei Taoyuan–Yangon service from daily to five times a week starting October 27.
CAL originally launched the route in 1997 with charter flights, and then changed it to a regular thrice-weekly service in 2008. Due to high demand – an average load factor of over 80 per cent in 2011 – daily flights commenced in October 2012. Other carriers followed suit and have been upping frequencies to the country (see here) which began opening up to the international community in April last year after military rule ended.
A source from CAL revealed that demand for the service has now fallen, and passenger load factor is down to 60 per cent this year, prompting the reduction in service frequency.
