Starwood continues expansion in China

23 Apr 2012

Starwood has announced it will open another 15 hotels in China by the end of this year, including the Westin properties announced earlier (see story here).

The hotel group reported that it opened eight hotels within the first quarter of this year in China already, while also signing 12 new deals in the first three months of the year.

Almost 44 per cent of the hotel group’s global pipeline is concentrated in China, “driven by an ever-increasing Chinese domestic travel market as well as the fast-growing international inbound market”, said Frits van Paasschen, president and chief executive of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide.

In addition to the Westin properties in various second-tier cities, the new hotels will consist of nine Sheraton-branded properties, including the world’s largest Sheraton within the Sands Cotai Central complex in Macau, poised to open in September this year (see story here). Furthermore, the group will open two Luxury Collection hotels – Twelve in Hengshan in Shanghai and The Royal Begonia on Hainan Island.

On top of the new openings, the group will revamp its older properties in China to maintain their competitiveness. Hotels that will receive face-lifts include the renowned Great Wall Sheraton Hotel Beijing as well as the Sheraton hotels in Xian, Nanjing and Chengdu.
