Rail and air disruption likely as severe winds hit Scotland

8 Dec 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Scot Rail has cancelled several services and Scottish airports are "monitoring advice", as the Met Office issues a red alert for severe weather across central and Southern Scotland.

Rail services are already being disrupted across Scotland, with Scot Rail publishing a temporary timetable as winds are expected to reach up to 90 miles per hour today.

Routes including Aberdeen to Inverurie, Glasgow Queens Street to Dunblane and Edinburgh to Glenrothes have all been cancelled, and between 1000 and 1800 there will be no Cross Country services running between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh. Local bus services are also being affected.

Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are currently open, but delays and cancellations are expected later today as wind speeds increase. Readers can keep up to date with the latest advice from UK airports by following their Twitter pages listed below.

On the subject of Twitter, two of the top trending hashtags worldwide are currently #scotstorm and #hurricanebawbag, the nickname seemingly having been given to the severe weather hitting Scotland.
