Hong Kong’s business events planners have a new option to offer clients for their next important function. Last night, the InterContinental Hotel's grand ballroom, stage of many high-profile social and networking activities in the past, was presented to the public – after months of redesign work – as an entirely refreshed product.
Said the hotel’s managing director Jean-Jacques Reibel: “Our vision was to create a space of the highest quality that has an understated and refined luxury and richness and provides guests with a sense of comfort and welcome.”
The iconic hotel, facing the Victoria Harbour, timed the unveiling to coincide with its 10th anniversary this month.
The 885 sqm ballroom remains one of the biggest pillarless venues in the city (a big plus with planners, who welcome the opportunity to create different setups), but now boasts design features inspired by a unique location along the waterfront, reflected in the hues of gold as seen during sunset and the graphic motif of concentric circles and wave-like patterns to emulate the sea outside. In the adjacent 446 sqm pre-function area, a circular installation, 360 degree Bar, is expected to act as a magnet for guests and encourage their interaction.
Feng shui elements are also incorporated in the new layout. These include the ceiling's bronze-and-glass fixture, showing "12 points of energy" radiating from it and the custom-made Brintons carpet with concentric circular patterns in auspicious colours of red, burgundy and copper, among others.
The hotel's iconic Italian Carrara marble staircase – the scene of many a bridal and group photo – was refined and polished, serving as a dramatic entry to the ballroom
