Garuda Indonesia pilots ended their 24-hour strike earlier than expected after company officials agreed to further negotiations regarding pay and working conditions.
The Garuda Pilots Union began their strike at midnight on July 27, 2011, which hardly disrupted both domestic and international flights, according to a Garuda spokesperson.
As reported earlier (see story here), the dispute focused on the difference in pay between foreign and local pilots. According to Garuda’s Pilot Association, local pilots earned 30 percent less than their foreign counterparts.
Garuda released a statement explaining the source of the issue. “Garuda Indonesia has in place a business expansion model to position the airline as a more competitive airline in the international flight industry. Garuda is continually expanding its fleet size and to fulfil expansion goals Garuda Indonesia has sought to recruit new pilots from aviation schools where pilots complete advanced training specific to aircraft types,” explained the release.
