Security at US airports has been breached on average seven times per day since November 2001, according to a report by USA Today.
The figures, obtained by the newspaper ahead of their release by the Department of Homeland Security later today, show that there have been over 25,000 breaches of security at US airports since 2001.
Of these over 14,000 breaches concerned “people entering 'limited-access' areas by going through airport doors or passageways without permission, or unauthorized people going from airport buildings to planes”.
According to the report the documents don’t confirm whether any of these breaches could have led to potential attacks on planes or passengers, and the article points out that the number of breaches is small compared to the 5.5 billion fliers who have passed through US airports since 2001.
USA Today said that the documents, due to be presented at a House subcommittee hearing later today (Wednesday July 13), also show that there were 6,000 breaches of security in which “Transportation Security Administration screeners failed to screen, or improperly screened, a passenger or a passenger's carry-on items”.
