Chinese authorities plan to build high-speed railway links from China to Singapore via Vietnam, which is aimed at enhancing trade relations between the country and the 10-member Asean nations.
Construction is set to begin in the second half of 2011 in Guangxi Zhuang, an autonomous region in southeast China. It will link the region’s capital – Nanning – with Pingxiang, a city near the China-Vietnam border. From there, the tracks will continue onwards to Singapore via Vietnam.
“We will invest RMB15.6 billion (US$3.05 billion) to build the railway linking Nanning and Singapore via Vietnam. This is extremely important for the Nanning-Singapore economic corridor,” Long Li, director of Guangxi Zhuang’s transportation department, told local media.
This project is part of China’s 12th Five-Year plan and is designed to enhance trade between the Asean countries and China following the implementation of the free trade agreement between the mainland the regional Asian bloc last year.
