Finnair strikes end

10 Dec 2010 by AndrewGough

Finnair's dispute with cabin crew appears to have come to an end, with services expected to return to normal over the weekend.

Finnish cabin crew union SLSY has accepted a deal from Finnair, ending a 10-day strike thought to have cost the airline at least €20 million.

The walk-out, which began on November 30, was over the airline’s plan to cut rest time between long haul flights from 36 hours to 24 hours.

Finnair's President & CEO Mika Vehviläinen said the new agreement, reached last night (December 9), “ensures that we can reduce costs through improved work productivity”.

“We obtained the necessary structural changes in long-haul traffic important for us," he said.

Finnair said its traffic will return to normal over the weekend. It had been operating between 35% and 50% of its flights during the strike.

Vehviläinen said the focus will now be on getting aircraft moving again.

"It's good that a solution has finally been reached... Our cabin staff, who do excellent work, also want to get back to work," he said.
