According to the press this week the order for 1,100 new rail carriages for Thamelink is unlikely to be signed before the spring. The order, which was announced in June 2011 (and given to Siemens at the expense of British jobs), was due to be signed in Dec 2011, then last Spring, then summer, then autumn, then the year end, then early 2013…..

Another example of incompetence in the DfT, and illustrates how any new airport a Boris Island would be unlikely to happen in a hurry, not if the DfT and civil service have anything to do with it…….

Also Simon, DfT has just imposed another restriction on security scanning at airports – kindles etc now have to be taken out of luggage and scanned seperately. What’s the problem – don’t they have confidence in the X-ray equipment or staff monitoring the screens? I’m not aware of any other airport in the world where this is required.

Shambles yes, of that there is no doubt, but they are not incompetent!
