As a first-time traveler to South Korea for business, here are some tips to ensure a smooth and successful trip:

Research the Culture: Familiarize yourself with South Korean customs and etiquette. Showing respect and understanding cultural norms (https://english.visitseoul.net/etiquette) will help you build positive relationships with your business counterparts.

Learn Basic Korean Phrases: While many Koreans speak English, knowing a few key phrases such as greetings and basic business terms can go a long way in facilitating communication and showing your interest in their culture.

Dress Professionally: South Koreans value professionalism and often dress formally for business. Follow suit by dressing in conservative and business-appropriate attire (https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/starting-new-job/guide-to-business-attire) unless otherwise specified.

Punctuality Matters: Arrive on time or even a few minutes early for meetings and appointments. Being punctual demonstrates respect for your colleagues and reflects positively on your professionalism.

Exchange Business Cards: The exchange of business cards is a common practice in South Korea. Ensure your cards are printed in English on one side and consider including Korean translations on the other. Present and receive cards with both hands and take a moment to read and acknowledge the details.

Business Etiquette (https://asialinkbusiness.com.au/republic-of-korea/conducting-business-in-korea/korean-business-culture-and-etiquette): During meetings, maintain a respectful and attentive demeanor. Avoid interrupting or criticizing others. Politeness, hierarchy, and a cooperative approach are valued in Korean business culture.

Gift-Giving: It’s common to exchange small gifts in business settings. Consider bringing gifts that reflect your own culture or items that are unique to your region. Present the gift with both hands and be modest and gracious when receiving gifts.

Networking Opportunities: Take advantage of networking events, business dinners, or social gatherings to build relationships. Engage in conversations, ask questions, and show genuine interest in getting to know your Korean counterparts.

Public Transportation: South Korea has a well-developed public transportation system, including subways, buses, and taxis. Familiarize yourself with the routes and options available, or consider using ride-hailing apps like KakaoTaxi or T-map for convenient travel (https://middleclass.sg/travel/apps-for-south-korea-travel/)

Explore During Free Time: If you have spare time, explore the local culture and attractions. Visit famous landmarks like palaces, markets, or art galleries. Experience traditional Korean cuisines, such as kimchi, bibimbap, or Korean barbecue. With the limited time you have, you may hire a local guide (https://gowithguide.com/korea) to maximize your travel. They can recommend the places to visit and the nearest restaurant to eat Korea’s must-try food.

Remember to stay updated with the latest travel advisories and guidelines (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/south-korea-travel-advisory.html), and ensure you have the necessary travel documents and insurance coverage.

Enjoy your business trip to South Korea and embrace the opportunities to learn and build connections in this dynamic country!

I totally agree with @awomanwhotravels tips for first-time business travelers to South Korea. I didn’t even need to use KakaoTaxi or T-map at all because the subways and buses are so convenient. Not only that, but also, Korean taxi drivers are amazing, but I’m not always in the mood for a white-knuckle ride, you know?
