As you begin to plan 2010’s travel diary, you would be well served by noting the dates of Farnborough, which only happens every two years.

Annoying if you’ve just snagged availability to SYD in F, but easily cancelled.

Dreamliner will be the big bird flying here. Will the A350XWB be up and running by then? Doubt it.

The Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) is one of the world’s most iconic global aviation events. FIA holds a prominent position within the aerospace calendar taking place over one week every two years.

FIA’s focus over the years on becoming a world-class business event proved a success after announcing a record breaking US$70 billion worth of orders in 2008. The 2008 event also featured 165 aircraft in static displays and spectacular flying displays, and two days open to the public that attracted a staggering 153,000 public visitors.

In 2010, the Farnborough International Airshow will be held from 19-25 July and is certain to be the most exciting to date.

With its existing exhibition halls, flying displays and UAV pavilion, FIA will evolve its business theme to include a number of networking opportunities.

These are to include a themed conference and seminar programme, a Meet Your Buyer programme and a weekend dedicated to International Futures for Youth. Additionally, 2010 will look at a dedicated Space Zone and an enhanced UAV presence.

One month to go; well worth it for a day out, but tickets can sell out so don’t dilly-dally!

    First Day’s Orders,

    — Emirates airline has ordered 30 Boeing long-range 777 aircraft worth a combined 9.1 billion dollars (7.0 billion euros), the Dubai airline said at the Farnborough airshow on Monday.

“We have a long and successful relationship with Boeing and I am pleased to announce that today Emirates has placed an order for an additionnal 30 Boeing 777-300,” said the airline’s chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

Jim Albaugh, Boeing chief executive, said on Monday that Boeing would be announcing further aircraft orders this week.

He also sought to allay concerns over delays to the company’s “lean and green” Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which arrived at Farnborough on Sunday after its maiden transatlantic flight.

The Dreamliner, already more than two years late, is due to be delivered to launch customer All Nippon Airways of Japan by the end of this year, but Boeing warned of further delays last week.

“If it slips into 2011 we are only talking about weeks,” Mr Albaugh said.
He went on: “We are not happy with the delays we have had, but once this plane is in service the people who fly on it will forgive us for it being late.”

    — Aeroflot reached a deal with European plane maker Airbus on Monday to purchase 11 A330-300 airplanes.

The catalog price for an A330-300, a medium-range commercial jet, is $200 million, valuing such a deal at as much as $2.2 billion. The aircraft will be delivered to the Russian airliner in 2011 to 2013.

The purchase comes after Aeroflot was dressed down by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin last week for a separate order of 22 Airbus A350s starting in 2016. Putin scolded the state-owned company for purchasing the long-range aircraft and overlooking the Irkut MS-21

    Day two,

    — LAN signs Memorandum of Understanding for 50 A320 Family aircraft,

LAN Airlines, one of Latin America’s leading passenger and cargo airlines, announced today its intention to order 50 new eco-efficient Airbus A320 Family aircraft. The Memorandum of Understanding – signed today at the Farnborough International Airshow – will be the largest single airline order for Airbus in Latin America and brings LAN’s total Airbus orders to 152 aircraft.

The commitment includes 10 A321s, a new aircraft type for LAN. The airline’s request for incremental A320 Family aircraft is part of LAN’s growth strategy for Latin America. The aircraft will serve as new and replacement aircraft for both existing and new routes.

    — Boeing and Royal Jordanian, the national carrier of Jordan, today signed an order for three 787-8s at the Farnborough International Airshow. The order is valued at approximately $500 million at list prices. This order previously was attributed to an unidentified customer on Boeing’s Orders and Deliveries website.

Direct purchases and leases combined, Royal Jordanian has committed to 11 787-8s. The Middle East carrier placed its first orders for four 787s in 2007 and also has arranged to lease two airplanes each from CIT Aerospace and International Lease Finance Co.

Royal Jordanian was the first airline in the Middle East to order the 787 Dreamliner. It will place the 787 on North American routes initially, including New York, Chicago, Detroit and Toronto. Royal Jordanian has cited the 787’s performance versatility and impressive economics as the main reasons behind its decision to replace its medium- and long-haul twin-aisle fleet solely with the 787.

I think flybe announced a big order as well, worth some £3bn.

Yep i received early today an email saying:

”We are delighted to inform you that this morning Flybe announced a $5bn order to purchase up to 140 Embraer jet aircraft. The initial firm order of 35 Embraer 175 jets, which will start to arrive into the Flybe fleet in 2011, will provide a platform for us to grow and expand our route network; bringing more and more Flybe travel options to you in the future both at home and in Continental Europe.”

I didn’t know if they signed it at Farnborough.

    Day 3

    — Farnborough,Thai Airways International (THAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus for the purchase of seven more A330-300s. The aircraft will be delivered from the end of 2011 and will join an existing fleet of 20 A330-300s flying to destinations across the Asia-Pacific region.

Not at Farnborough but in Seattle ,

Boeing, American Airlines Complete Order for 35 Next-Generation
    737s

American Airlines, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMR Corp., today announced the airline has exercised options for an additional 35 Next-Generation 737-800s.

The order is part of American Airlines’ ongoing fleet renewal plan, replacing MD-80s with fuel-efficient Next-Generation 737s. The 737-800 is 35 percent more fuel efficient on a seat-mile basis than the MD-80s it will replace.

Today’s 35 new orders build on an order for 84 737s that began arriving in 2009. American currently expects to have a total of 195 737-800s in its single-aisle fleet by the end of 2012.

Sadly I left my chequebook at home.

No show next year, and Farnborough 2012 will be a few weeks earlier from 9-15 July, a few weeks before the London Olympics (which begin on 27 July – mental note to be out of the country as soon after the Opening Ceremony as possible).
