On this day, 40 years ago, 257 people died when an Air New Zealand DC10 on a sightseeing flight in Antarctica crashed into Mt Erebus.

The BBC article gives some interesting background to this disaster. For myself, I am struck by the fact that this and the DC10 crash at O’Hare in the same year are the first air accidents I can remember reading about at the time when I was only 11 years old.

It’s a shame that such sightseeing flights have not restarted as it is one I would love to do one day.
