    … Doesn’t sound like it

UK quarantine hotels cost taxpayer £400m, watchdog finds

“Quarantine hotels for inbound travellers to the UK during Covid have cost the taxpayer more than £400m, a National Audit Office (NAO) investigation has found, including almost £100m in unpaid room bills and fraud.

While the government expected the hotels’ costs would be covered by the occupants, it has emerged that the taxpayer has been left responsible for more than half of the £757m bill. The rooms were for those travelling to the UK from high-risk “red list” countries during the pandemic….”

Your checkout bill for Covid quarantine hotels: £400m

Public shouldered half cost of No 10’s travel policy to curb virus but had little to show for it as just 1 in 50 passengers tested positive

    The Times
£400m mystery of whether quarantine hotels worked

“For travellers from countries thought to pose the highest risk of dangerous variants, a system of compulsory quarantine in hotels was introduced in January last year. Under the scheme 214,000 people stayed in such hotels, which cost £367 per family per night. Although the scheme was meant to be self-financing, about half the £757 million cost has ended up being met by the taxpayer.”

No, they did not work. Even £1m of expenditure would have been a step too far given the power such an amount money has on lifting children and deserving adults out of poverty.

Unimaginable amount of taxpayer money has been misappropriated during the pandemic with no or little benefit to public health. Travel wise, there isn’t a single country in the world that has succeeded in containing, slowing or stopping variants from spreading through the population.

The entire effort to tackle the pandemic was based on wishful thinking and no attention has been paid to the medium or long term economic damage caused by travel restrictions. Indeed, travel restrictions have vastly sped up the economic decline of Sri Lanka amongst others.
