Oscars is situated in the centre of Mullingar, about an hour’s drive from Dublin. We were visiting friends in the area, and we visited Oscars for dinner. Whilst not immediately obvious as a business venue, the area does offer several nice places to visit, such as a couple of country estates, gardens, etc.

It was about 6pm on a monday evening, and first impressions were good:nicely laid out restaurant, warm welcome and we were seated immediately. The restaurant was quite busy, so having telephoned ahead to book a table (for 5 of us) was a good idea.

The early bird menu was available, and offers a choice of 7 starters, and 10 mains: pretty impressive.

A particularly nice touch was placing a carafe of water on the table when we were seated: no pressure to buy bottled water.

Amongst the starters we chose were: Clonakilty Black Pudding and Bacon Bruchetta, Chicken Wings & Baby Back ribs with BBQ Sauce and Garlic Dip, and Crispy Bacon Caesar Salad with Oscars special dressing. The portions were generous, and the food perfectly presented.

For mains, two of us had Lamb shank with roasted vegetable casserole and champ mash: the lamb was melt in the mouth and tasted wonderful. Two others had Chicken Volcano: Deep fried fillets of chicken on stir fried vegetables with “molten lava” sauce. Again both meals were excellent.

I opted for Chunks of Cod in a light coconut batter served on a platter of sizzling vegetables with Mango scented Corriander Lime Salsa and steamed rice. This was accompanied by cajun fried potatoes. This dish was a masterpiece of presentation: the cominnation of cod chunks and sizzling vegetables looked every bit as good as it tasted.

Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. To find such quality food in a provincial town is a pleasant surprise. To get this quality of food and service for a mere 21euro for two courses is nothing short of amazing.

The house red wine at 5euro a glass is another veritable bargain. I cannot remember what it was called, but is was delightful.

Would be recommend Oscars to friends: YES

Would we return in the future: Most definitely YES!!
