It is a problem affecting both internal and external flights. And it’s a problem which is most acute during the Christmas / New Year period when they know “rich” Europeans are travelling and their bags are likely full of goodies.

Kulula send their bags to a holding area which is monitored by them. However this only happens if you check-in 2 hours or less before the flight. Otherwise it goes into the general holding area until called forward.

Swiss and Lufthansa also keep their pax’s bags under surveillance but not sure if this is the case for all passengers or just premium ones. For sure on arrival First Class baggage is accompanied from plane to belt where it is off loaded and kept under guard till you clear immigration.

I wrap my bags whenever flying to/from SA and, touch wood, have not had a problem, so would recommend this to anyone travelling down here.
