The west of London is a logical positioning as the east of london requires crossing the Thames fromeither the North or the South and as a result roadways are more restricted. It is also easier to connect to the routes to the North West, Scotland, Wales, South West and Southern England by Rail. Unfortunately the West of London is in the middle of the current government’s parliamentary seats. We have heard much talk about making difficult decisions for the national good however having a long term common sense transport policy does not seem to be included within these hard decicions, presumably it is too hard if it means you will lose supporters votes.

No matter where the airport is situated, it will not suit some people as well as LHR does now and if it is out to the east I will be one of them. That said, the LHR site is beyond redemption, a third runway would solve nothing as it would soon reach saturation point too no matter what promises are made.

There isn’t a logical place in the Thames Valley for a new airport but London needs one badly. The only real options are to the east regardless of how convenient or not that may be.

You’re right, it will not suit some people, but LHR is a lot more convenient for most people than Boris Island will ever be.

An airport is a necessary evil, and needs to be situated where there is most demand.

Oh look, we’ve drifted off again…

Cabinet MPs are elected purely for political reasons, there is nothing to do with experience this time round. Ms Greening is definitely biased against LHR expansion, any other suggestion is unthinkable. The only MP who had transport experience was Lord Adonis, and he was obsessed!

Why do cargo only aircraft need to land at Heathrow. Motorways and fuel at Stansted and Cambridge.

    GA to Northolt and Biggin.

Room for passenger increase at Heathrow.

It should be remembered that the post of Transport Secretary involves road, rail, shipping as well as air transport.

It is shocking and shameful that this post is just looked as a stepping stone to “greater things”, especially as it provides the opportunity to invest heavily in infrastructure and thus have a strongly positive effect on everyday life and employment both directly and indirectly.

We will rue the loss of Lord Adonis in the post for quite some time yet.
He was the best Transport Secretary since Ernest Marples (who provided the brief for and oversaw the Dr. Beeching railway cuts in the early 1960s).
That says a lot for the persons who have occupied the postion since then – can you remember any ?

I remember the marples must go campaign though.

Cargo only aircraft land at LHR because the airlines have slots, and a lot of the freight is moved on with passenger flights. I think CX has a cargo only flight in addition to their 4 daily passenger flights.

It would be nice if these flights and GA were banned from LHR though.

How about replacing all A320s/737s with 787s/A350s?
